Intercultural Events| house biography in two cultures
Houses have evolved alongside changes in family structures and within the broader context of societal development. Comparing the evolution of houses between a Dutch and a Chinese family since the 1980s not only sheds light on their individual family stories but also highlights the similarities and differences between the two cultures and societies.
I was born in this port city, where both of my grandfathers worked for the port. My parents’ first house was located next to the old port along what was then the city’s main road.
When I went to university in another city, my parents moved into an old six-story apartment building without an elevator, near a forest. They enjoyed the convenient access to green spaces and lived there for two decades. However, as my father entered his 60s, climbing six flights of stairs became increasingly difficult.
Fate has now brought us back to the seaside. This time, we’ve moved into a new apartment near the new port in the suburbs.
